As we continue to mark National Aviation Week, hear from our Operations Manager, Eleanor Zahra who oversees our Malta office on what working in aviation means to her.
I’ve been with JMC Aviation for 11 years, starting as an On-site Manager in Malta. In that role, I focused on keeping operations running smoothly and ensuring both clients and contractors were supported. As the business grew, I became Operations Manager, overseeing all activities in Malta. Over the past year, we’ve opened a dedicated Malta office, where I now lead a team of four, managing recruitment not only for Malta but across Europe, to ensure our customers in the region are as supported as possible. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see the team and the business grow over the years.
What do you find most exciting about working in the industry?
What excites me most about aviation is its pace and variety. Every day is different, never a dull moment, whether it’s solving operational challenges, supporting clients and contractors, or navigating the global demands of the business. It’s an industry that constantly evolves, connecting people and places all over the world, and that energy is what keeps me passionate about my work.
What do you think has changed the industry the most?
I’d say several factors, but COVID really reshaped aviation in a big way. Many companies had to scale back, and fewer people are working in the industry now than before. At the same time, low-cost airlines and expanded routes have changed how passengers travel and what they expect. Technology has also advanced quickly, making operations more efficient, but requiring the industry to adapt at the same speed. It’s been challenging, but these changes have also made aviation more resilient and innovative.
What do you think the future of aviation looks like?
I see a future that’s both greener and more connected. Innovations like alternative fuels and electric aircraft will make the industry more sustainable, while better connectivity will open up new destinations and experiences. Aviation will continue to connect people, cultures, and businesses in ways we can only imagine today.
What would you say to someone considering a role in aviation?
I’d say it’s an industry full of opportunity, variety, and challenge. Aviation has been such an exciting journey for me that it even inspired my son to join the industry himself. If you enjoy problem-solving, working with people from around the world, and being part of a constantly evolving sector, aviation is incredibly rewarding. You’ll grow professionally, personally, and gain experiences that you can’t find anywhere else
If you could go on a once in a lifetime trip anywhere in the world, where would you go and what would you do?
I’d love to go to New Zealand – exploring the mountains, hiking through the landscapes, and experiencing the country’s natural beauty. It’s the perfect mix of adventure, discovery, and recharge, which is something everyone needs from time to time.
